Quoted from a blog I found:
"Blockbuster" is often used as shorthand for "artistically and intellectually arid commercial vehicle". That's more often true than not, but there have been more than enough exceptions to the rule to conclude that it is not necessarily the case. At their best, blockbusters can provide a unique escapist thrill coupled with a riveting visual spectacle, and, let's face it - they are the reason most of us came to love cinema in the first place. Cinephile snobbery aside, most of us harbour a torch for at least some blockbuster films, and we have to admit that, in a healthy, balanced cinematic diet, they are as necessary as the works of the great auteurs.
Yeah, this blogger says it well! Currently, this is my trend of thought too.

So, Singapore needs BOTH 'Singapore Dreaming' and '881'. Yeah! More of it more of it!
You know what, I somehow think tv shows exploring the culture of Singapore these days have a tendency to go right down to showing just Chinatown, the miserably few 'street performances' we have when there are just our elders singing songs for the fun of it and more, and also independent Chinese drama companies performing in the heartland.. Well, these have been around in past years and it's quite natural they are taken to constitute the heritage of Singapore.. And I'm not speaking disrespectfully of our elders at all.. But I don't hope to see Singapore conveniently promoting this as our culture, and worse still, for the sole purpose of attracting tourists.. Just because it's already there, doesn't mean that is all there is to our culture.. I hope there is going to be more than that in defining our culture..
Over time, I have occasionally come to be willing to try to love life in Singapore a bit more.. Haha.. Because life in Singapore gives me comfort from time to time.. Don't know what kind of troubles the world out there will present.. But even though one can perhaps shine out from the crowd more easily, it may only be because the number of people around are few.. Hmm, consider Singapore Idol and American Idol perhaps. And if say you form a band with a rare musical style here, it's much much easier to take the whole of Singapore on a wave of great popularity for yourself, because it's gonna be easier to be the first of a kind too. Considering Singapore's music scene is like.. Well I don't have to clarify it, just compare it with America's and you get my drift? Haha.. But yes, I know I know. Singapore is small, and thus all the proportions of every other thing is too. Aside from ambitions to make more and more money, and bring in more and more commodities to enable Singaporeans to shop like siao. Singaporeans happy, government also happy. Win-win situation. *CHING! (i.e. sound of cash register)* Lol! BUT. Somebody here is not happy. Yes, it's yours truly... Well, come on! There's more than that, you know.. Well, I leave it at that for now.. Sometimes philosophy really doesn't have worth.. Today I shall use my time for other things XD
Oh I'm not finished with my point about my hoping there's gonna be more to defining our culture.. Because I'm a youngster, I'll like to see that the activities of youths and young adults are included in defining our culture too! Although I do agree with the opinion that Singapore is going to need time to form our culture.. Just hope that we don't remain to be a country solely concerned with economic activity! And even if our arts scene is opening up, don't be artsy just to act aristocratic.. Open our eyes and see that the rest of the world is huge.. And other people are leading such vastly different lives.. So if one's life is the same always, doesn't the question of whether any meaning can be found in such a life come in..? A society should have varied minds, varied tastes. The mind cannot be so narrow, so techno! Lol. You will get the joke if you watch '881'!
But one thing I cannot like about Singapore, and maybe not for a long time to come, is the pretty mindless education.. What I've experienced, that is.. I see changes are taking place all the time, I hope (and am not completely hopeless *cross my fingers*) improvement can really come about.. But that won't have anything to do with me already, by the time the improvement comes (if it does come).. Chances are rarely given.. It's a suffocating system, which stifles real development of the mind.. Because I feel that learning at its most interesting point will also be most effective, and will also have to be free reign and free of mindless competition.. Yes, mindless competition it is.. Competition is a great thing when it pushes one to do better.. But mindless competition is counterproductive instead.. Because being surrounded by people who mug for the best of grades because it looks good on their certificate plus resume is not the right motivation.. If mugging is how the 'learning' is carried out, then the education itself also appears to be a problem.. But who knows what I'll come across on going to Australia to study.. Things may more or less be the same everywhere.. Sucks to that! Haha.. Haiz just forget it now.. The money required for this degree is loads.. That has been emphasizing to me the importance of money in this world, though I often believe that a stifling environment would kill me faster than the lack of money.. What would happen if I fail in my studies overseas.. I mean, it's not so much considering what will happen.. But more of, the money spent translates to the idea that even if this should be a 'mission impossible', also need to turn it into a 'mission-impossible made possible'. Lol.. Jeez
Bye for now!
