Heyy! I'm going to make this post a quick one.. Now my brother has also watched '881', and he didn't like it one bit.. The parts about the chicken feathers, and silly fights between the Papaya and Durian sisters etc, made him almost walk out of the cinema in the middle of the movie.. I was like thinking, "Oook.. What a strong reaction.." Haha.. His reason? He expected to watch something that would tell us more about the life of a getai singer when he bought his tickets for this '881' movie.. But instead a silly plot was dished out.. He said he expected that much from Royston Tan.. Seeing his previous work, '15', tells about the lives of gangsters.. That stuff is real.. And to my bro, '881' obviously cannot compare coz it doesn't touch on what goes on in the life of a getai singer at all..

I considered this, and then said to myself, "Hey yeah! Never came to my mind till now! It's true, you know! I didn't realize it in the midst of taking in the flamboyant sights of the movie, but it's true that the plot is basically, zero!" Lolz.. Ok, I didn't put it that way to be mean or anything.. But let's juz get on, coz I said I'll be making this quick.. It -is- undeniable though, you can't think of the story in '881' as much of a plot at all.. Royston Tan could have included a slice of the life of a getai singer in the narrative, to make '881' better than it already it.. I still like the movie, I'll mention why in a while.. But including a bit on the life of a getai singer should not have been left out.. Coz now I realize that the Papaya sisters kept singing dialect songs of how hard life was, but I don't know what kind of background they have at all? So what justifies their singing of those songs? One of them falls sick (yes, that I know) but surely '881' doesn't want to go the way of a melodramatic korean drama or something.. I didn't notice the cliche of having Mindee Ong fall sick in '881', coz like I said, I was busy taking in the flamboyant sights and all the happenings etc..

And yeah, the part about chicken feathers and bras of the Durian sisters shooting laser rays and stuff? They don't exactly contribute to the humour either, so I now feel that all that is unnecessary.. I accepted them as I watched all those happening.. But come to think of it now, all that were not laughable even.. I thought that the scene of the bras shooting lazer rays did something positive for the trailer.. But now my brother let me rethink this.. And I remember I didn't laugh much at all when the girls were fighting.. So in conclusion, I don't find '881' as funny as I thought it was before.. Hehe.

So, one thing for sure, one fault of the movie is that it lacks the narrative of a -real- story about how getai singers go about their unusual singing careers. It wouldn't have been so hard to give the characters Mindee Ong and Yeo Yann Yann a bit of a real background, and it would have done so much for the movie too.

Oh but, the cast is great! My bro seconds that. (^^) Mindee Ong is real pretty.. And Yeo Yann Yann is a convincing actress too.. The auntie of the Papaya Sisters actually gives the movie a bit of reality, now that I think of it.. Which the movie would otherwise lack coz it has an irrelevant plot.. The cast is truly good.. Well chosen.. Even Qi Yu Wu.. Though really a bit extra.. His character has a sort of quiet charm.. In some shots, that is.. Coz his character is also quite degraded.. Play with his cock etc la.. And is sometimes shown as a somewhat retarded son la.. Agree? But I wld also give him credit for his composed acting, for the little parts he got to play

Now to consider the likeable points of the movie. Though I said I don't find the movie as funny now as I thought before, it still is pretty funny! The alternate definition of HIV is especially so.. XD And another thing which is a pretty good achievement is that overall, the movie is also happening! The flamboyance of the costumes, the getai sisters actually running in their costumes to get on stage.. They practise their act, in a group with their auntie and all.. Those shots were somewhat in slow motion, and those scenes turn out to be quite heartwarming too.. The 'jie mei' idea, which means the idea of the togetherness of the sisters, is there.. So I think it can be said Royston Tan went the way of making a feel good family movie this time, and not something like '15' which impresses one about the reality of how some other person's life (in this case, a gangster's life) is different..

It's quite good that '881' is a happening movie.. Shows another type of movie Singapore can manage to film.. I have thought for a while now that Singapore have a number of short films by various people.. But we have many short films now, coz currently the means of filming a long movie is available to just a few individuals like Jack Neo, and now Royston Tan.. And some short films give me the impression that they're just trying to be artsy. But seeing '881' made me wonder that something 'ah lian' can be made into such a wonderful sight. =) Heh.. I don't mean to call it 'ah lian'.. It's my affectionate way of labelling '881' though.. Hmm back to the point about trying to be artsy. Well I don't really know. But it could be that some people show themselves to be interested in the arts scene, because they know of the idea that getting involved in the arts can show that one is cultured and all, you know.. I may be going off course again.. But once again, one should try to go about achieving something not to prove to others that you are this and that, and then only one feel that one can carry one's head high? That would be being obnoxious.. Pride comes from within, I guess.. One could try to go about achieving something just to show oneself that one can keep doing better.. Well, but I see that I could be bringing up too many ideals.. Think I tend to do that when I blog.. But otherwise, what else could I try to figure out when I blog? One tries to figure out how to continue carrying out one's actions best..

Perhaps Royston Tan has shown me this time that he continues to film unusual things, things other people won't even -think- of filming coz they might be afraid of incredulous responses.. I wondered how the first people he would have discussed his idea of making a getai movie idea with, might have reacted.. But wow, his box office takings won over a couple of other movies which are showing now too.. I'd be glad to watch his other upcoming movies if he continues to film the unusual and very different lives of some other kinds of people.. It's always nice to know of a life different from one's own.. I think so.. Don't know if many other people think so or not.. But this makes things less boring if you ask me.. Which is why I'm glad for movies, tv, travel and all that! It's a pity this time we don't get to find out a little about a getai singer's life.. Although I already thought it interesting that Royston Tan goes to get in contact with the real getai singers..

Oh and once again, regarding my saying some short films seem to attempt to be all artsy.. Don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, but perhaps it's because I don't have much of a good impression of Singapore short films, coz of watching some not so good ones at The Substation, and other times, on Arts Central. And on my volunteer stints in helping out with stage theatre, not all the people I come across care very much for theatre as something worth delving into, exploring for its own sake.. Hmm don't really know how to put it.. But can somewhat tell how far the interest reaches..

Oh but I can't even say much about myself yet! I have nothing solid done either.. Yet. And I gotta end this post already! I also like '881' for its angles. The angles from which the movie is shot are really well done. The actors' lines also seem like some thought was put into them, coz the lines do mean something. Costumes are good, music is good! And this time there really are exciting sights! Sometimes one goes into a cinema to catch a show to indulge in such excitement, and forget oneself for a while. And coz I have been watching Hollywood stuff all along (with the exception of some of the undeniably crappy stuff they produce quite often now), it's great to know that Singapore can also produce something exciting like that. Well yeah, bring on more of it! Haha. Andddddd, I really gotta go.
