Man oh man.. Listen to that organ music! I had the greatest luck to have been able to watch the Phantom of the Opera musical yesterday! My brother's friend couldn't make it at the last minute, so I went in his place.. :D My brother will then return his friend the money lor.. I one cent also don't have to give ^__^ *lol* The ticket cost just $47 by the way.. Student price! Cheap already lor.. The people who were allocated seats BEHIND us paid $100+.. My gosh.. And the seats are are really quite far for the price of $100+.. When $100+ is already expensive enough.. The theatre was fully occupied.. The front seats were also all occupied.. Can't imagine how come all those people willing to pay as much as $200+, $300+.. Of course I know it's a world-class act.. But still..
I will explain a little why I didn't even feel bowled over by the musical or anything.. I won't give top marks for it.. Hehe.. Of course it isn't so bad at all, but it's not all that highly amazing either.. There weren't as many surprises, nor as many moments of excitement.. Well, you might know that I like things to be most dramatic.. So the parts where the cast sang love songs didn't make any great impression on me.. During the singing of the love songs, only two members of the cast would be left on the stage, cos obviously they would be singing of their love to each other only.. Then the backdrop scenery doesn't change.. And the two lovers would just move around and sing.. And at such points in time, the voices singing the love song would be the only thing left to impress the audience, and would be what the audience will concentrate on. So, the voices singing the love song need to be especially good and mesmerizing.. Too bad I wasn't so impressed with the female lead's (who is the woman the Phantom loves) voice.. Really lah.. Don't give me that kind of 'You think you can be better?' response hor.. Of course not.. I'm not even in the industry.. But, someone is truly better than the female lead casted this time, and that is a previous female lead.. Of the original cast of the Phantom of the Opera.. Long ago lor.. My bro had the soundtrack in his computer since some time ago too.. And at first (before I listened to the original soundtrack), I wondered if I could say that the newly casted female lead wasn't that good.. Now after listening to the original soundtrack, I'm quite sure of my opinion already.. Original IS better lar.. My bro seconds the opinion =) The newly casted male lead doesn't fall short of the standard of the Phantom's voice so much though.. I appreciated the newly casted male lead's (i.e. the Phantom) voice more than the female lead's..
Have you observed that.. Very often, original or beginning productions are better than subsequent productions? Be it music albums, or as I have 'assessed', this Phantom of the Opera musical.. (But Jay Chou is still keeping me happy with all his new albums, hehehe. Yet Wu Yue Tian's standards have dropped.. Lin Jun Jie also..) It's kinda inevitable.. Definitely there are more cases of subsequent productions dropping in standards, than of those becoming better.. Think about the many movie sequels.. Dramas also.. I would think that japanese dramas have declined in standards.. Generally, I should be right in saying this, isn't it.. (Spiderman rox for the fact that the sequel did not disappoint me *yay*) But why does this happen? Hmm, more thinking can be put into this.. Sometimes, it may also be such that people just rigidly think that the old-time originals will be the best always.. Or can say it as-- They have been from the start inclined to think that way.. Because old shows = classics mah.. They will stick to such an idea one..
Then the popularity of some things is also overrated.. Such as, Harry Potter.. Don't start staring daggers.. Lol.. I don't have much criticism, but cos I work in Borders, then I know of the fact that the preorder start so damn early, and etc.. And it seems like a part of everybody's lives.. Cos even the management of Borders, who may not care about Harry Potter, also have to go about arranging all this preorder stuff and all that.. Then it's like J.K. Rowling has an impact on practically everybody like that.. Even adults who have no interest in what she writes also have to care about the release date of her latest book.. With the release of any of her books, people start to busy themselves.. Events to hold and everything.. Borders had the staff dress up in a Harry Potter-ish way for the release of her previous book.. Got one supervisor dress up as Hagrid somemore.. Lolz.. Fun lah.. But ONLY SHE got this kind of magical power to make everybody so busy with the release of her books.. Only she is soooo GREAT.. Haha.. Ok lah, I stop here.. I don't hate her stories, you know..
And going back to the talk about the Phantom of the Opera, also just 'cause it's a world famous act, some people in the theatre somehow appreciate it too easily.. Laughing excessively at the parts which were not exactly funny.. Really one.. My bro seconds this too.. Haha.. Anyway he was the one who said it (but soft enough so that not everyone around will hear lah) to me and his girlfriend first during the interval.. Those people need to enjoy themselves so very thoroughly, is it? Maybe they die die will not let themselves feel disappointed with the show, otherwise they will feel regret at having paid so much for the ticket.. Lolx.. I shan't be mean.. Juz kidding only ^_^"
Let me sum up a little.. The not so good points about the opera.. The singing of the leading cast was not as impactful.. Especially in the case of the female lead.. But when a whole group of singing the song 'Masquerade' together', it was powerful and grand enough! One of my fav tunes from the soundtrack now.. Majestic and lively.. I'll put on this song after this! And the music that is playing now right, the organ music-- I LOVE! Terrifying! The scary parts of the musical were the parts I love most..=D I wish it had been even scarier.. I would have liked it so much more!
I wanna stop here now.. I haven't talked about the parts I did like though! The scary parts in particular.. Dunno if I will retain the mood to continue blogging this.. I may or may not do so.. But anyway, I'll see ya the next blog post =)
Soak in the electrifying terror of the music !!! x_x
Oh wait! I have to say this while you listen to this music! The start of the show was so fantastic! The lights were turned off, and the audience all prepared themselves for the start of the opera.. But what kicked start the opera was beyond, and in fact above, expectation! To me, that is.. This very piece of music you're hearing now came on at full blast, and billowing clouds of white smoke enveloped the theatre, with glaring blue specks of light flashing on and off around.. Can you imagine that? This damn power music combined with the smoke and lights, the terror is heightened 'cause the smoke and the blinking specks of light enveloped one in confusion.. SO VERY COOL.. I was thinking, "What the-?" and feeling so excited at the same time.. Heheh.. Oh and add to that one more effect.. One dimly lit, ghostlike chandelier floated down over the audience through the smoke and all.. That was awesome too.. I love such usage of the space.. Come closer to the audience better mah.. Almost puts you in the scene.. And anyway, the Phantom of the Opera is itself an opera within an opera.. Heh.. Oh and, the chandelier wasn't made of glass lah.. They can't risk a heavy, glass chandelier crashing down on a rich, fat woman in the audience.. Haha.. I'm imagining the stereotypical comic type lah.. In stage dramas, there would be rich fat ladies to be made a joke of mah.. The chandelier looked extremely light btw.. My guess is that it's made of plastic.. The Phantom had been angry and wrecked havoc in one scene, causing the theatre's (the one in the opera of coz) chandelier to come crashing down, and the thing floated down not that fast and landed so softly.. Haha.. Ok, that's all for now!
