(If you're gonna watch "A Battle of Wits", no need to read this entry then! You can discover the movie's messages on your own! =D)

"A Battle of Wits" is an awesome movie! It's a war movie starring Andy Lau.. And it's much better than what the trailer appears to merely offer.. It's not so much about the violence in war, but focuses more on the tactics and ideology of war.. Oh and the war is set in ancient times, between the ancient kingdoms.. Important lessons can be learnt fr this movie.. It shows the distinction btwn fighting to protect one's people, and fighting bcoz of one's savagery.. This movie also has the usual character of the single bloody stupid Emperor, along with his equally brainless general.. Haha

And this general is fittingly named 'General Niu', translated as 'cow'.. Lol.. Subtle criticism, with humour.. Such a small humourous effect is interesting! We've learnt abt humour based on the characters' names in a play, for Lit.. But this is different.. It's a serious movie, yet has this kind of humour.. This is simply interesting! Furthermore, it's not likely that everyone in the audience will realize abt this play of names.. Unlike the farcical comedies we study.. Everything is like, 'duh'.. Yet I dun even know if they called that fella 'General Niu' for this particular reason or not, but I'm guessing it is so..

And with regards to the bloody Emperor, song4 ta1 yi2 ju4 hua4(I'll present him with a saying), &#^$(&@%* !!! Lolz.. This kind of character is meant to make you feel like strangling him, but u'll be helpless coz u can't reach an image on the screen.. Haha.. This isn't the first time I've seen movies or read stories in which a single stupid King can ruin the lives of all the ppl in the Kingdom.. So maddening right.. I then think of the phrase 'One for All', but in this case, it wld have a totally opposite meaning.. One person's actions result in all being sacrificed! >___<

But the bloody Emperor in this movie is not stereotyped in that way also.. His low intellect sure is maddening, and at the same time, he is shown to represent the kind of person who goes to war due to his own savagery.. Worse still, the war victories his kingdom gains are not even due to his credit! He is glad to claim the victories to boost his own power at the end of the day, but it is actually the character acted out by Andy Lau, who is the brilliant strategist that helps the kingdom to defend itself really well against enemies.. So you get the general idea now? The Emperor as the savage one, who claims victories at the expense of a loss of his people's lives (and the victories are not even rightfully his).. And Andy Lau's character as the advocator of peace, coz he would rather take on the defensive, and would only attack if neccessary.. But there's no hint that Andy Lau's character would be able to enjoy success.. He may be able defend the cities, and help them to victoriously force the enemy to retreat.. But his ideology will never be infused into everyone, though it is the ideology with the most 'heart'.. So it becomes questionable whether he is victorious at all at the end of the movie.. And anyway he eventually leaves the Kingdom which he had defended successfully.. So as to spread the message of peace..

All these can be applied in the modern context yeah.. And in the past, it has happened as well, all over the world.. Coz I now bring to mind how the Directory had tried to prevent Napoleon from returning to France during the period of the French Revolution.. That was after Napoleon had won a number of victories for France.. The Directory then went on to claim the victory for themselves.. Also, recall that the Directory wanted to prevent Napoleon's return to France, bcoz they knew the French people all admired Napoleon then, and thus they were afraid the support Napoleon had wld naturally topple the Directory.. Same thing happened in the movie! The commoners were supporting Andy Lau's character after he won a first victory for them, then the Emperor and his govt went on to declare that Andy Lau's character was planning to bring the govt down.. This was the excuse they used to try to nab Andy Lau's character next..

I'm not too sure if the story in this movie really took place in ancient China though? I know it was adapted from a comic.. But if the story did take place in ancient China, and include the French Revolution that followed, then it further proves that policies of government and war have a lot of similar trends! In the past, and in the present too.. But I dun have much knowledge abt the present trends.. I believe they have somewhat changed, but still I think they wun be very much different.. Perhaps I'll put more thought into the present trends regarding government policy and war, and blog abt it some time later.. Or maybe I wun be getting it down here, but in some other website..

The ideology of 'universal love' was also brought up in the movie.. It's the ideology of the Mozi clan or something, as the subtitles had said.. Mo Zhe.. (The movie's title is "Mo Gong" - Gong as in Attack) Who's this ancient grp of people? They really existed? Dunno who can educate me abt this grp of people and their ideology.. It wld be interesting to know.. But listen to that.. 'Universal love'.. Sounds a little TOO noble.. Because it doesn't seem achieveable.. And I say that wld be TOO noble, coz if it's not achievable, why bother to hold such standards then? Hmm, I'll put more thought into this term 'universal love', but not for now.. So interesting to think abt also.. Can you imagine it? Uh-uh *shakes head* Haha..

And this is quite a long entry huh! A movie can make me talk so much.. Haha, but not just for movies lah.. Whatever can stimulate me to have a long string of thoughts would work! And were the 'A' level exams ever able to do that for me? Blah blah blah blah.. Haha.. I'll leave off complaining abt the system.. For tonight =)

Oh and, pardon me if I sound rushed.. But that's the way I am when the string of thoughts come about.. Hehe yeahh

/ believe in wonderland,
with you in my mind
it's not that hard to believe
i'm in wonderland
and that's where I am
only a place to where we know
and never escape into reality
plunge into a fantasy

just about my love
