"I see." And this was all that Yul said, as he and Chae Gyung kept moving along with the soothing music. It seemed like they did not have a need to communicate with too many words, and could yet match each other's pace wonderfully.
Yul had a faint idea at the back of his mind that this was surely the girl that the old man had said he would meet, but being so carried away with her very presence, Yul merely cared about enjoying every moment of her company.
But Chae Gyung decided to just make some conversation, and ventured to uncover more about her mysterious dance partner.
"You're not from these parts of the country, are you? I don't think I've ever seen you around here.." Chae Gyung said, running through her mind all the many faces she has come across, but Yul's features did not fit into the picture.
Yul flashed a tiny smile, and answered as truthfully as he could.
"Yeah.. I'm of different birth.."
Chae Gyung took it that Yul was saying he was of a different nationality, and so Yul's words came to pass. But being the restless conversationalist she was, she once again spoke her mind.
"Yet you seem to be different in a lot of other ways too.. It's like you have this underlying knowledge and experience which others do not share.." Yul did not make any protest, and tried to bring out as much of his sincerity as possible from his unshielded eyes. Chae Gyung was aware that his eyes were trained on her, which caused her to look to the ground bashfully though not without pleasure.
Yul and Chae Gyung danced on. One song ended, followed by another, and then yet another.. The two of them were getting more and more matched in terms of the pacing, and Chae Gyung was also getting increasingly comfortable and at ease with Yul holding her so very gently.. The only thing was, Chae Gyung could see that there were many ladies around who still awaited their turn to dance with Yul.
"Hey," Chae Gyung whispered to Yul, wanting to get his attention but not that of those girls'. "I think I've been 'hogging' you for too long.." Chae Gyung's words trailed off, and she glanced around a little disconcertingly.
Yul smiled in amusement, and tugged lightly at Chae Gyung's arm to get her to focus back on him. "Don't worry about all that." Yul said to Chae Gyung, who had turned to look at him once again. "I'm not letting you go, no matter what.." Chae Gyung's eyeslids flickered, and she was speechless for a while while Yul gave her a reassuring beam.
And at that moment, there came the sound of trumpets, and a royal servant announced to all the people present, "The Crown Prince has arrived!" Chae Gyung's head turned swiftly to where the Crown Prince was expected to come from, and then she turned back to face Yul, appearing to have something to tell him. However, she was prevented from saying anything because everyone else had fallen silent as they waited respectfully for the Prince's arrival.
Soon enough, the Crown Prince entered into the ballroom, and smiled in general acknowledgement of all those who were present, injecting as much goodwill into his smile as he could manage, though such a process is basically more of a matter of form for a Crown Prince. And once this was over and done with, the people returned his smile with warm welcomes, and then the party could go on. Likewise the lively music resumed.
However, Chae Gyung remained standing on the same spot, though the other couples had carried on dancing. Yul asked, "Anything wrong?" Chae Gyung looked into his slightly concerned face, and wished to not keep him in the dark, for all the sincerity he had shown her..
By then, the Crown Prince had come up to Chae Gyung's side, accompanied by a few of his royal guards and servants.. Yul did not feel intimidated by them at all, but when he saw the Crown Prince taking Chae Gyung's hand, he froze.
Yul shifted his view away from their locked hands onto Chae Gyung herself, wordlessly imploring Chae Gyung to explain the scene to him. Chae Gyung first smiled at the Crown Prince in greeting, and then looked at Yul again in worry.
The Crown Prince saw where Chae Gyung's look was directed, and also looked upon Yul. The Crown Prince's facial expression next showed that he could not register in his mind who Yul could be, and how he could be related to Chae Gyung. However, he decided to do away with all his reservations, and offered a handshake.
"I'm familiar with most of the people at this party, but I don't believe I'm acquainted with you.. I'm Shin." The Crown Prince said with accustomed courtesy.
Yul shook Shin's hand with an equal measure of courtesy, and also gave his name. But his main concern was still that of hearing what Chae Gyung had to say, and Chae Gyung was also waiting for the right moment to explain.
Prince Shin gave a slight bow to indicate that he was leaving, and he tugged at Chae Gyung's hand to urge her to go with him as well.
"Come on." He said to her, teasingly giving her his familiar impatient look. Chae Gyung got a little annoyed, and showed a defiant demeanor, which too was familiar to Prince Shin.
Shin then led the way in moving off, and his royal guards and servants also started up in motion. Chae Gyung deliberately lagged behind a little, although it was quite hard for her to do so with Prince Shin holding her hand. Still, Chae Gyung managed to say out what she had wanted to tell Yul from just now..
"I am the Crown Princess, and I am married to Shin.."
A look of apology spread over Chae Gyung's face, as she was led off further and further away from Yul..
Yul instantly felt a crushing wave of sadness, and his spirits hit rock-bottom. Minutes ago, he had felt as though he had been placed on the highest peak of the world.. And now having hit rock-bottom, he realized that the pain of seeing Chae Gyung leave was just as intense as the happiness he had first felt while dancing with her.. But it all makes sense, Yul thought to himself bitterly. Why do I realize only now that the fall would be just as great as the the initial height I was brought to?
Yul slowly retreated from the group of dancing couples, and away from the whole crowd of people in general.. He took steps backward in a daze, back in the direction from which he had entered the ballroom. Clouds of mist were starting to gather around him, and Yul did not even come to observe them, as to question where the mist had come from. The other people did not see the mist either, for the mist was actually solely due to Yul's situation. The fact was that magic was once again working around Yul, but Yul remained too downcast to notice.. The people and their voices seemed to be moving further away too, and Yul was left to his own despondent thoughts..
'I never thought that I could feel any worse than I had felt in a state of poverty.. But now I see that I was wrong about that..' Such were Yul's thoughts which rang in his mind.
And if the people at the party could see the magic that was working, they would witness Yul as the charming stranger to themselves, retreat among the magical clouds of mist. And though he was decked out in a very fine tuxedo which only the very rich could afford, noone who could have seen Yul's melancholy countenance then could have told that he was rich at all..
And from that day onwards, noone ever saw the mysterious princely figure nor the poor peddlar ever again...
